Strategy and Wargaming News – 25th May – The Last General, WARNO, SGS Overlord

Yeah, I guess I’m back. It happened that I made the mistake of booting up Dark Souls, a game that I never understood the hype of until I booted it up again this week. But anyways, that I have finally achieved “jit gud” status, let’s delve into the most recent strategy and wargaming news of the past few days.

Last week we experimented with splitting this kind of article into two pages, 5 articles per page, and it worked out great, so make sure to check page number 2!

WARNO Released

After a two-year stay in Early Access, WARNO, the most recent real-time strategy game from Eugen Systems, the creators of the Wargame and Steel Division series is finally out, and it has been garnering extremely positive reviews from its player base.

The game’s packed with content, featuring 23 divisions, 5 Army General Campaigns (Eugen’s version of Total War meets modern warfare real-time strategy that debuted with Steel Division 2), 24 maps, and 7 countries. To populate these two dozen divisions are more than 100 tanks, 155 planes, 110 helicopters, upwards of 260 infantry units, and over 400 other vehicles.

After playing around 8 hours of WARNO I can confidently say that it’s my favourite Eugen Systems game so far (and I loved Steel Division), because they finally managed to hit that sweet spot of game speed balance, and the fact that there’s so much single player content (I don’t play multiplayer), just tingles me in the most satisfying way possible. Hopefully, the single-player content hose will keep on working.

The Last General

Here’s the weird and most intriguing one of the week: The Last General. I spotted this one in the wild, in a Youtube ad this week, this upcoming real-time strategy intrigued me with its looks and premises of being a “modern war strategy” that will allow you to guide “hundreds of groups of armoured vehicles, artillery, infantry troops, supply and transport trucks” at your disposal.

There’s almost zero information currently aside from its marketing mumbo jumbo so I decided to reach out to the developers – Wakety LLC- asking for an interview. I’ll publish it if they get back to me.

SGS Overlord

Philippe Thibaut, the man who created Europa Universalis keeps on pumping out new wargame experiences with impressive regularity. His studio SGS, is launching a new title set during D-Day, and will put you at the helm of the largest amphibious operation in History.

The game’s Grand Campaign will cover the whole operation in Normandy, from June 6th until September 3rd, using 3-day turns (the game is set to last around 30 turns). Other small scenarios exclusively zoom into particular aspects of that massive military undertaking: The landings and the first week of combat; The battle for Caen; The race towards Cherbourg; Operation Cobra and the failed counter-offensive at Mortain.

Strategic Command WWII: War in the Pacific – Release Date

Matrix Games’ Strategic Command WWII: War in the Pacific is coming out on June 25th, 2024, and this wargame will put players in charge of commanding the troops of 7 major powers: Japan, Australia, China, Communist China, USA, UK and the USSR. Fight the Pacific War across a massive 36,000 hexes map, from India to the West Coast of North America.

Capes Out Soon

You’ve probably noticed a big banner on the main page of the website! That’s right, Capes is the first official banner from publishers to appear on Strategy and Wargaming, and I couldn’t be happier!

Capes is coming out in just a couple of days, and in my preview, I had a lot of fun with it, but also some criticism, describing it as an underexplored premise of XCOM with memorable superheroes and an intriguing campaign and story.
