Strategy and Wargaming News- 13th May – Homeworld 3, Ultimate General: Civil War On Steam; Men of War 2 Out Soon

Hello, everybody! I’m glad to see everyone is loving Tom’s column! If you have new ideas for him, please let him know! But I’m writing this small paragraph just to explain why I’m currently splitting these new articles into 2 pages: basically, they were really long and made formatting a bit confusing. If you think this is a bad idea, please email me or write a comment down below.

Homeworld 3 Out

Finally, after all these years, the Homeworld series has a new entry. Developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox, Homeworld 3 is taking the series back to its space roots after a very uneventful detour with Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.

Homeworld 3 is beautiful and massive, with a 13-mission-long, story-focused campaign. For the first time in the series, Homeworld 3 attempts to add terrain to its battlespace, by having the battles take place in huge space derelicts called megaliths. You can use these structures and the game’s iconic 3-axis movement to set up ambushes, kill zones and funnels to your advantage.

Homeworld 3 costs $59.99/59,99€/£49.99 and it’s available now on the Steam store.

Ultimate General: American Revolution On Steam

After a couple of years with little to no updates, Ultimate General: American Revolution was released on the tail end of 2023- mid-development- and was really good, and it was only been getting better with every update. Now, Ultimate General: Civil War is coming to Steam, as the game was only available to buy from the American Revolution webpage.

The game is expected to stay on Early Access for half a year while the developing team finishes the US campaign. The game’s campaign has half of its campaign finished.

If you don’t know what Ultimate General: American Revolution is, picture this: Total War meets Ultimate General: Civil War. It’s the first of the Ultimate General series of games to feature a grand campaign map instead of a series of scripted battles. I have played it for a couple of hours, and I have to say that’s really damn good and well worth getting into it right now.

Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy Battle Pack 2

This was a pleasant surprise! If you’re an average reader of Strategy and Wargaming, by now you must have read somewhere that I love the Combat Mission series and that Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is my favourite of the bunch, and I consider it to be one of the best World War 2 games ever made.

The Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy Battle Pack 2 is releasing on June 6th, the anniversary of D-Day. The Battlepack will focus on the actions of the 4th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division from June 6th to the 13th of June, 1944.

Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy Battle Pack 2 contains 8 standalone scenarios, 3 campaigns with 21 variant scenarios, and 6 master maps.

Men of War 2 Out Soon

I have a renewed respect for Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing for giving me a review key for Men of War 2 after I flat-out said that I disliked its demo (or preview, I can’t remember) with a passion. Now, I’m glad they did, because I’m having a blast with the game’s campaigns. They’re by no means perfect, and the game is facing an uphill battle going against the much beloved Gates of Hell.

I’m not so sure what the Men of War veterans want in 2024, but I suspect their main focus is on the multiplayer. As a single-player kind of guy, I’m clearly an outlier here, but Men of War 2 campaigns have been extremely fun in a very silly kind of way that reminds me of older RTS titles. If realism is what you’re looking for, then I’m afraid that Men of War 2 is not going to be the game for you: tanks handle like toys, units have near infinity range, and the ballistics of its equipment just look a bit silly when compared to what this series was, but I’m having fun.

Men of War comes out on the 15th of May, 2024 and the team has confirmed that the game’s going to be always online at launch, but they’re working on an offline mode.

Sins of a Solar Empire 2

Another iconic series is getting a new entry in 2024 with Sins of a Solar Empire 2. The classic RTS/4X mix that made the first one so special is coming to Steam sometime during the summer. There’s no concrete release date as of yet and no pricing has been announced.
