By: OneHex is going dot-com! Here’s what to expect in 2021 – One Hex Away https://strategyandwargaming.com/2019/02/22/engaging-with-history-through-videogames-101/comment-page-1/#comment-252 Sat, 02 Jan 2021 20:06:06 +0000 http://onehexaway.wordpress.com/?p=652#comment-252 […] History Related Content– OneHex was given birth by myself in a very special moment of my life when I wished to read more and explore the relationship between History and Videogames, but weirdly enough the mix is scarcely covered and written about. A few theories arose as to why such a match made in heaven is rarely featured in most mainstream gaming media. Videogames sometimes cover large swaths of World History and usually explore those moments in multifaceted ways, each of which requires some in-depth knowledge to trully make for an interesting article. As a former journalist myself I know how hard it ist to juggle instant, pressing matters and shape them into news while investigating, interviewing and researching new topics for more documentary-like pieces. One of my main goals with OneHexAway has always been to explore the symbiotic relationship between Videogames and History so in 2021 I hope take a deeper dive and go back to finish writting part 2 of my essay on Engaging with History Through Videogames (Check out part 1 if you haven’t read it yet). I use to take a periodo and read about it, with the companion game at hand. For example, right now I’m interesting more than anything on WWI and I’m reading some osprey works about it, some more deep into battle books (Ten Days in August: The Siege of Liège 1914, Battle of the Ardennes 1914, First World War) and the games made them more tangible.

For expample, in Ten Days in August, I got the tactical movements of the brigades and even companies, but they are less abstract when I paired it with Tiller’s France 14 and the 2 scenarios that have this battle, on the level of detail of companies. You see the mad dash that they tried to do at night and you see how futile would be to do it, as it was in real life, so I got the history of the event and I understand through the game rules whath happened.

Waiting for more lessons on this serie.
