DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Do you know that if the Peotone airport were built it would be almost 3 and one-half times the size of O’Hare?

Do you know that if the Peotone airport was built it would:

  • Increase property taxes significantly in Will County? Residents of Peotone, Monee, University Park, Crete & Beecher will be subjected to increased taxes, noise, air and water pollution, congestion & crime.

  • destroy over 1000 single-family homes?

  • destroy 95 working farms consisting of 23,698 acres of prime & important farmland?

  • close 7 general aviation fields & 18 businesses?

  • cause Will Township to lose 59% of its revenue?

  • cause a 10% to 25% loss of revenue for the Monee, Beecher & Peotone Fire Protection Districts?

Do you know:

  • over $100 million has been spent studying and promoting this Peotone airport?

  • $175 million has been allocated to purchase land in the airport footprint?

When land is purchased by the state, taxes are no longer paid to the local taxing bodies causing financial hardships. The road districts, school districts, fire districts, and library districts all lose tax dollars - what happens then? Those taxes are passed on to others to help pay for the services those taxing bodies provide.

  • Not a single airline has made a financial commitment to this airport?

  • There is no infrastructure currently in place and no water supply.

  • Property purchased by IDOT has caused property tax losses of $34,710.90 for Monee Township, $107,663 for Will Township & $1,811.56 for Washington Township?

10 GOOD REASONS TO STOP THE PEOTONE AIRPORT

It is absolutely unnecessary. Chicago's air traffic needs can be easily met without it. Chicago's south side already has easy access to 2 commercial airports: Midway and Gary/Chicago.

It will cause sprawl on an unprecedented scale, ruining the rural areas south of Chicago with hundreds of square miles of development.

It will destroy more than 1,200 acres of floodplain, which could lead to greater flooding in nearby communities.

At over 40 miles from the Loop, Peotone is about one-third of the way to Champaign-Urbana.

It will destroy over 15,600 acres of prime farmland within the airport footprint and would encourage sprawl that could destroy hundreds of thousands of additional acres of farmland.

It will lead to over 140 million pounds of new air pollution in Kankakee, Will, southern Cook, and Lake (Indiana) Counties.

It will pave over more than 180 acres of wetlands and 7 miles of streams, reducing fishing, hunting and bird watching.

It will mean over 120 million pounds of extra trash in communities south of Chicago, including over 3 million pounds of hazardous and industrial wastes.

All major airlines oppose it.

It will increase local demand for water by almost 50 million gallons per day--at a time when some areas south of Chicago are already facing potential water shortages.
