Gov. Brian Kemp names longtime agent to lead Georgia Bureau of Investigation
ATLANTA (AP) — Chris Hosey will lead the Georgia Bureau of Investigation beginning Aug. 1 after he was appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp. Hosey's appointment was approved Saturday by the state Board of Public Safety. He is taking over for Mike Register, who's stepping down after less than a year on the job. Register is Cobb County's next public safety director.

(AP) — Pennsylvania authorities drew on 100 people, drones and cadaver dogs Monday in their search for two missing children whose family's car was swept away in flash flooding that ravaged the East Coast over the weekend. Other parts of the country endured threateningly high temperatures and severe air pollution from Canadian wildfires.
Suspected of kidnapping her twice, Georgia man now faces murder charge in ex-girlfriend's death
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killing of his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, a woman he also is accused of having kidnapped a year earlier. Police identified the suspect in the Sunday night abduction and shooting as Cameron Ja’Michael Hopkins, 20, of Albany.
Two-vehicle wreck kills 5 in fiery crash on northeast Georgia highway
ALTO, Ga. (AP) — Five people are dead after a wreck on a busy northeast Georgia highway. State troopers say Avonlea Holtzclaw of Dahlonega was trying to cross U.S. 23 in a Ford Explorer Sunday afternoon when a driver going northbound hit her. The wreck happened near Alto in Habersham County.
Vanishing whale's decline worse than previously thought, feds say
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A review of the status of a vanishing species of whale found that the animal's population is in worse shape than previously thought, federal ocean regulators said Monday. The North Atlantic right whale numbers less than 350, and it has been declining in population for several years. The federal government declared the whale's decline an “unusual mortality event,” which means an unexpected and significant die-off, in 2017.
