Strategy and Wargaming News – 14th July – Falling Frontier, Gilded Destiny, Commandos: Origins

Welcome, Summer season! Now that we’re all stocked up with the best Steam Summer Sale deals of 2024, it’s time to shred those backlogs during these summer vacations! Welcome reader, to this week’s Strategy and Wargaming News!

Commandos: Origins Gameplay Footage

We finally got a small peak at the up-and-coming sequel to the famous Commandos series of games- Commandos: Origins. The revealed footage seems that Claymore Game Studios, the team working on it, is attempting to bring back the glory days of the series, and I have to say that I’m rather impressed with what I’m seeing right now. Commandos has been one of my favourite game series since I was a small kid, so hopefully, Commandos: Origins will live up to the expectations, after 21 years with no main games in the series, since Commandos 3 came out in 2003. Commandos: Origins is set to come out this year, but no precise release date has been announced as of yet.

Falling Frontier

I was recently made aware of Falling Frontier. This real-time strategy game promises to be “a revolutionary sci-fi RTS where ship design, recon, and logistics are critical elements”. To be published by Hooded Horse, maybe Falling Frontier will fill the galaxy-sized hole left on Homeworld fans after the less-than-stellar release of Homeworld 3.

Call to Arms – Gates of Hell New DLC

If my eyes don’t deceive me, that’s the Nijmegen bridge, so it looks like the best real-time-strategy game you can play right now, Call to Arms – Gates of Hell’s next DLC is going to take place during the Market Garden Operation. While there’s no Steam page available at the moment to check what new units, missions and campaigns are going to be added, if the past DLCs are anything to go by, this will be another excellent addition to an already stupendous game.

Gilded Destiny

Another game I was recently made aware of is called Gilded Destiny, and it’s looking like it could give Paradox Victoria 3 a run for its Victorian-era grand-strategy monopoly. As its Victorian counterpart, Gilded Destiny is a grand-strategy title that aims to depict the transformative era that was the Industrial Revolution. The Steam page for the game describes itself as a “deep simulation of societal transformation, industrialization, the economy, warfare, and diplomacy”. I don’t know if that’s going to be the case, but the game’s certainly looking impressive, and the developers haven’t shied away from very regular uploads on their YouTube channel.

Cataclismo Releasing Soon

The blocky fortress defender, Cataclismo is coming out in just over a week from now, releasing on July 22nd. While I haven’t heard people talking about it, the fact that it’s coming from the creators of Moonlighter and The Mageseeker means that it has some pedigree backing it. Hooded Horse sent me a review key for it, so maybe I should write about it? Is anyone interested in that? Let me know in the comments down below.

Tally-Ho Strategos’ Interview

My favourite games writer, Tim Stone from the Tally-Ho Corner published an amazing interview shining a spotlight on Strategos, a real-time tactics wargame set in classical antiquity. I believe it’s worth a read, so go say “Hi” to Tim.

Xenonauts 2 Massive Update

We just wanted to let you know that our X-COM-inspired turn-based tactical game Xenonauts 2 has just received another major milestone update, and this one brings the big guns! The aliens get their first ever “larger” UFO, and can now count with the help of Androns, robotic alien soldiers with a lot of armour. As for the humans, the Xenonauts now get to deploy the Colossus Battlesuit. The game’s currently on a 30% sale on Steam.

USC: Counterforce 1.0 Out On 18th of July

Turn-based games enthusiasts might find some consolation during the dry summer season with the release of USC: Counterforce, a tactics game where you’ll lead a team of space commandos across a full-length campaign inspired by XCOM against an alien menace. The game has been in Early Access for quite some time, and it has garnered an 88% Steam user rating.

I’ve been running Strategy and Wargaming at my own expense since 2017, with only the ad revenue to cover the hosting, with everything else being done by me. It’s thanks to the goodwill of video game publishers like Slitherine, Hooded Horse, and others that I’m able to cover games prior to

One response to “Strategy and Wargaming News – 14th July – Falling Frontier, Gilded Destiny, Commandos: Origins”

  1. Falling Frontier is the one that really hits for me. I’ve been watching it for a while and its one of the most ‘grounded in reality’ science fiction settings I’ve seen since The Expanse. You’re right about Homeworld 3 being a bit lacklustre. Falling Frontier could quite possibly fill the cosmic-sized hole left by the poor reception of HW3.
