Set against the backdrop of the Ardennes Offensive, a favorite theatre for many wargaming enthusiasts – yours truly included- it provides an accessible entry point into the world of operational and tactical-level strategy.

Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive excels at providing a solid foundation for those new to the genre. Its less abstract approach makes the game easier to grasp, allowing players to focus on the core strategic challenges. This title is the latest installment in the Decisive Campaigns series, which also includes The Blitzkrieg From Warsaw to Paris and Barbarossa, offering additional historical scenarios to explore.

8 – The Troop

The Troop is a standout title that captures the essence of squad-level World War II combat with exceptional authenticity. This game evokes the simplicity of classic titles like Battle Academy while offering a modern, refined, gritty, and realistic experience. Its focus on infantry tactics and the challenges faced by Allied troops during the Normandy campaign is unparalleled if you’re looking for a game that’s easy to get into, but extremely tough to fully master.

By giving players the possibility of playing how they wish, The Troop is particularly unique. While it may not be the most complex wargame available, it excels at providing a thrilling and engaging experience for both seasoned veterans and newcomers to the genre. The game’s potential is further enhanced by the massive amount of content available: 36 hand-crafted missions, dynamic and persistent campaigns, as well as a robust skirmish mode.

6 – Gates of Hell – Ostfront: Liberation DLC

Gates of Hell: Ostfront is a modern masterpiece in the real-time strategy genre, and is often hailed as the spiritual successor to the beloved Men of War series. In my opinion, Gates of Hell is the best Men of War-like that has ever existed, and it’s better than every Men of War title currently available. It delivers one of the most comprehensive World War II experiences, boasting a vast array of units, vehicles, and historical battles.

With its dynamic campaigns, robust multiplayer, and thriving modding community, Gates of Hell: Ostfront offers endless replayability and customization options. The game’s attention to detail and realistic gameplay mechanics do their best to immerse players in the brutal realities of war. If you want to feel like you’re there, the game also allows you to control your soldiers from a third-person perspective, and tanks from the first-person perspective.

For fans of the Men of War series and real-time strategy enthusiasts alike, Gates of Hell: Ostfront is a must-play. Its exceptional value, frequent updates, and engaging content make it a standout title in the genre. It’s also very cheap, often.
