Strategy and Wargaming News – 23th August – CM: MO Red Tide DLC, Grand Tactician Civil War, Gates of Hell

Communication is a precious commodity in the eastern front, you know? When your orders are dependent on russian conscripts, it can be a hard thing to come by. Let my misadventures in the next DLC for Unity of Command 2, Moscow ’41. Nevertheless, my willpower to bring you the best gaming news of the past seven days is so strong that nor cold nor foe could stop me. Besides, I’m on holidays from my real job so expect an influx of great content to come the next couple weeks with reviews for Moscow ’41, Grand Tactician: The Civil War and some new AARs.

Command: Red Tide announced

Games like War in the East 2 look under the bed every night for Command: Modern Operations before turning off the lights. A game so massively complex even trying to make sense of what’s going on is a game in it’s own right. If you’re a persistent one and love the piece of marvellous technology, then you can sink your teeth into their latest DLC. Red Tiderecreates a “what if” conflict between NATO and Communist powers, a follow on from ” Northern Inferno 1975″, twelve scenarios across all areas of the World including the Pacific, North Atlantic, South China Sea.

Call to Arms – Gates of Hell: Ostfront Gets a Massive Update

This Men of War replacement finally got out this year, after being five in the making. Not only was it extremely well received by their predecessor’s community but, developers are bent on building up on top of the very solid foundation the laid out for what is- arguably- the best World War 2 RTS out right now. The update is so massive it takes several mouse wheel spins to reach the end of the page. But here’s the gist of it: expect new recon soldiers, tanks and weapons. Four brand new multiplayer maps and six reworks on existing ones. Updates to squad composition, several quality of life improvements and fixes. Read the whole thing here.

Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front Getting Another DLC

More content for Mius Front is always a good thing on my book. This up and coming DLC brings two new operations of 12 turns, covering the german offensive from the bridgehead at Bolshoy. It recreates an area of 100 sq. km and the historical organizational structure of the units present at the conflict.

Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

Grand Tactician has aspirations to be the all-encompassing american civil war wargame and after some technical hiccups in its early access phase, it seems to be coming along nicely. It’s going to be up against hard ingrained classics, Sid Meier’s Gettysburg, Scourge of War: Gettysburg, Civil War II, Ultimate General: Civil War. Grand Tactician is aiming it’s muskets high, mixing strategic decision making and tactical battles. The game is releasing September 24, 2021.

War Mongrels Gets a Release Date and a New Trailer

War Mongrels is shaping up to be one of the most brutal World War II experiences to ever reach home computers. The grim dark setting, the uncompromising depiction of vicious war crimes and the raw brutality of the gameplay is sure to stir some feathers prior to it’s release. It’s surprising (and a shame) that War Mongrels has gotten so little attention, given its thematic potential to reach a very large audience of both historical pundits and folk with a passing interest in World War II interested folk. Here’s hoping the shock value, packaged with excellent gameplay and story telling will turn this underdog autumn release a success.

Humanking Out Now

It’s no secret I absolutely despise Civilization VI. Firaxis continuous negligence about the warfare aspect of Civ has done it for me. As someone with absolutely no interest in winning games by pilling up points, optimizing builds and rushing arbitrary objectives without rhyme nor reason. Civilization IV marks the last time my attention was snagged, since then, any passing interest has vanished. With a small exception being made for Beyond Earth that, despite being universally shat on by everybody, at least made an effort to stir up the formula. Despite the lukewarm reception of Humankind, the idea of creating my own culture and paving my own way through the ages is enough to entice me to jump into it and see for myself what this fuss is all about. Also, add to that that the combat is actually somewhat interesting, with units unstacking to fight across dozen-hex wide maps with terrain, bonus and other systems, all at work to create an interesting challenge.

Age of Empires IV Fails to Impress

With each Age of empires IV bit of gameplay that comes to light the more it convinces me that it’s going to bomb. This is all the more disappointing coming from Relic, who are doing a great job at rehabilitating Company of Heroes. Cartoony graphics, floaty animations and an overall lack of any familiarity with the Age of Empires of yore, it all comes together to rub my fancy in all the wrong ways. If anything, I have no doubt it’s going to be a commercial success, but in the long run it’s going up against Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and that’s a battle AoE IV already lost.

WEGO World War II: Stalingrad is Out Soon

Another operational level release, this time from Brian Kelly, it’s built on top of what was the framework of Desert War 1940-42. Read more here.

  1. War Mongrels is really an impressive find, I have never saw anything about it in many of the forums that I read. Good recommendation.
