Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy Battle Pack 2 – First Impressions

This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy that marked a turning point in World War II. To commemorate this historic event, the developers of the tactical wargame Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy have released a new DLC called Battle Pack 2!

Battle Pack 2 adds new scenarios, campaigns, and maps that challenge you to make the tough decisions that faced commanders on D-Day and beyond.

The DLC features:

  • 8 standalone scenarios
  • 3 campaigns (with 21 variant scenarios)
  • 6 master maps (covering 63.7 square kilometres)

I’ve given some of those scenarios a go, and it must be said that Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy is always a blast, and I’m so happy I get to experience it on new maps and new campaigns.

I’ve given the standalone battles a go and finished 3 of those and yes, they got my seal of approval because they’re well-designed, they are challenging and force you to think like a commander would. There’s also the added benefit that you’re mostly commanding a rag-tag bunch of paratroopers who are tired, low on ammo and have to make do with what’s available, which is a challenge on its own.

There’s also a good balance between large, medium and small missions, the shorter one you can get done with it within 15 to 20 minutes, while the largest one (screenshot below) is probably going to take the full 3 hours.

I’ll always consider Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy to be one of the best World War 2 games of all time, and I’ll recommend it to anyone interested in World War 2 combat, and who wants to give wargames a go. The Battle Pack 2 is another reason in the existing pile of reasons.

It is important to note that this DLC requires the base game Combat Mission Battle for Normandy and the previous DLC Commonwealth Forces and Market Garden and Vehicle Pack on Steam to play.

  1. Good read, thank you.

IMO Combat Mission was great for its time, and was great for a long time, but I can no longer abide by its clunky engine. Today there’re better WWII wargames that cover Normandy out there by WDS, Lock n’ Load, Matrix, and Microprose.
