Strategy and Wargaming News – 26th June- Steam Summer Sale, Combat Mission, Burden of Command

After quite the absence- due to me having to finish a pesky thing called Post-Grad, and Oli, our incompetent intern cat being so fat one could mistake him for being the Megazord of kittens, is on vacation – Strategy and Wargaming is coming back. I’m planning on going full steam this summer, with many games to cover and many exciting things to be up to date on. Oh, also. I’ve played Dredge and it’s an amazing game, check it out if you love anything sea and fishing related.

Now You Can Buy Me a Coffee

After being away for a while due to the constraints explained above, I intend to keep on working even harder on Strategy and Wargaming. I’ve been running Strategy and Wargaming at my own expense since 2017, with only the ad-revenue to cover for the hosting, with everything else being done by me. It’s thanks to the goodwill of videogame publishers like Slitherine, Hooded Horse, and others that I’m able to cover games prior to their releases. So, If you’re an avid reader, you can afford it, and want to support the website, please consider Buying Me a Coffee by clicking this link.

I’ll write an article later elaborating on this, letting everyone know what the future holds and what I would like to do, given enough funding.

Thanks in advance, Nuno and Oli.

Steam Summer Sale Is On

There’s a high chance that by the time this article goes live the Steam Summer Sale is in full swing. Expect a list of my personal recommendations, of turn-based, real-time, and wargames, and a couple of other, less strategy-related picks.

Last Train Home

If the Last Train Home gameplay is half as good as its trailer, then everybody is in for a treat. Set during and after the First World War, the game will have you commanding the Czechoslovakian soldiers back home aboard their armored train across Siberia, fighting the Reds and Whites. The gameplay appears to be similar to Commandos and Partisans 1941.

Xenonauts 2 Has a Release Date

Xenonauts came out all the way back in 2014, can you believe that? Almost a decade later, Xenonauts 2 is finally releasing, updating the 90s XCOM formula to a more modern standard for those that crave a more unforgiving and detailed combat system. And it’s coming out on the 18th of July.

Burden of Command Alpha

“Slow and steady wins the race”, some say. “Better late than never”, say me. Burden of Command is finally getting too close to seeing the light of day, with “Most features are complete, and overall campaign has been built and tested as a series of ‘mini’ campaigns (e.g. Morocco, Italy, etc.)! We are ready to start Phase 2 playtesting. That means full campaign playtesting!”.

So yeah, while we still lack any D-Day for Burden of Command, I couldn’t be happier that the team behind it is still enthusiastic and putting it all on the line to deliver the ultimate WWII Company commander experience for those Band of Brothers lovers.

Combat Mission: Red Thunder Launches On Steam

The venerable series is slowly edging its way into Steam, with the help of Slitherine. After Shock Force 2, Black Sea, Cold War, and Battle For Normandy, World War II simmers can now fight their way through some of the greatest battles of the Eastern Front in Combat Mission: Red Thunder. Features include:

  • Tactical warfare at battalion and below scale in a true 3D environment;
  • Command individual vehicles, teams, and squads;
  • Expansive simulation of “soft factors” such as Morale, Experience, and Leadership;
  • Innovative systems portraying Fog of War, Spotting, Line of Sight, Command & Control, and Objectives;
  • Unmatched realistic physics, ballistics, and battlefield effects;
  • Fight in a wide range of weather and lighting conditions, all of which realistically impact fighting abilities;
  • Unique hybrid system for RealTime and WeGo (turn-based) play;
  • Full-featured Editor for maps, scenarios, and campaigns;
  • The quick Battle system sets up deliberate or randomized battles based on player specifications;
  • Single-player and head-to-head play, including Play By Email (PBEM+++);
  • Supported for the long haul with patches, upgrades, and expansions;

Read my First Impressions of some of the Combat Mission series games here. Yes, they’re excellent and I enjoy them more than I do Mius Front, and I do indeed think they’re the best WWII tactical games money can buy.

Classified: France ’44 Meets XCOM

It appears that the Second World War is back in vogue. I never understood the lack of video games taking place in occupied France and featuring the heroic actions of the French resistance. Now pair that up with XCOM-esque combat and progression system and Classified: France ’44 might have a winning formula.

D.O.R.F. Is A Real-Time Throwback To The Golden Age Of RTS

Remember the first time you played Red Alert 2? How amazing its pixel art looked like? And remember when you came back to it 20 years later and how disappointed you were that things in the 90s are a bit too pixelated for our, more refined taste of this day and age? And how the controls weren’t at all that intuitive? I’m pretty sure the developers of D.O.R.F. felt the same, and that’s why they decided to recreate what I can only assume Red Alert 3 was supposed to be. Amazing artistic direction, fast-paced action, and ridiculous weaponry are just *chefs’ kisses*. I’ll be anxiously expecting a release date.

Age of Sigmar Gets An RTS

The quality of Warhammer videogames is so inconsistent that even hearing about Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin has me weary. And I’ll continue to be so until actual gameplay is released.

Follow Strategy and Wargaming Socials

If you enjoy Strategy and Wargaming, then you need to follow its socials. Are we the best strategy gaming website around? I would say so. Heck, what other options do you have? The Wargamer? Please.

So why not give us a follow on the cesspool that is Twitter, or join the 1000 other geriatric patients on Facebook? Or subscribe down below? Or maybe do everything? I don’t care, I’m not your grandmother.
