Strategy and Wargaming News – 1st December – Scourge of War Remastered, New Cycle, Slitherine Winter Sale

Scourge of War – Remastered Is Happening

However, not a lot is known about it, and if my assessment is correct, the current description on the Steam Page for Scourge of War – Remastered isn’t updated to reflect what the word “Remastered” means. But by the look of the available screenshots, the game is looking better.

New Cycle Launch Date Announced

Core Engage and Daedalic Entertainment have announced that New Cycle will launch into Steam’s Early Access on January 18th 2024. It’s a survival city-builder in the vein of Frostpunk, but instead of the cold, you’re dealing with a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by solar flares. It’s a dieselpunk-inspired game that places players at the helm of a group of settlers seeking refuge after the solar catastrophe that destroyed most of the planet. For Core’s Engage first title, this is looking rather neat.

Republic of Pirates Announced

PQube announced a new title called Republic of Pirates, a pirate-theme city builder and real-time strategy that’s coming to Steam and Epic in 2024. It’s looking very reminiscent of the earlier 2000s Anno series. The trailer isn’t enough to either make me excited for it or to dismiss it outright, so I’ll be waiting for a proper gameplay reveal before dishing out any judgment.

Boat Crew – Announcement

A couple of months (or years) back I booted up an earlier version of Boat Crew and remembered being put off by its incredible difficulty and rough control scheme. Maybe things have improved since then. MicroProse was kind enough to provide me with a review copy, so I’ll be skimming the waves with my PT Boat from the Mosquito Fleet this weekend to see if this is worth it. It’s interesting, and games like these (and Bomber Crew) are right up my alley, except when having to deal with too many things at once overloads my pea-sized brain and I get too tired to go on.

Slitherine Winter Sale – Up to 90% Off

Slitherine and Matrix a running a 38-day long (at the time of writing) discount sale on the whole catalogue, with discounts that can reach up to 90% off. I can personally advise on the following purchases:

Destroyer: The U-BOAT Hunter Interview

I’m currently in the process of penning an interview with the team behind the rather intriguing Destroyer: The U-BOAT Hunter, a World War 2 (for those of you who are less historically savvy), authentic and historically accurate destroyer simulation game set against the background of the events that unfurled in the Atlantic during World War 2.

Wargame Design Studio Updates Civil War Battles and Napoleonic Battles

Wargame Design Studio keep on updating its series. Since the team discovered a couple of problems with the AI routines while getting ready for the release of Musket & Pike and didn’t want to wait for the next major update (which might not happen for at least six months) they decided to put them out now. Check the whole thing on their website.

Menace Is Looking Gory

A couple of months ago, the studio behind the vicious Battle Brothers announced Menace, a new turn-based strategy title. Now they’ve released a couple of gameplay snippets that look both charming and extremely gory.

Angola ’86 Is Thing

Every Single Soldier- the team behind COIN classics Vietnam ’65 and Afghanistan ’11– recently launched Angola ’86 into Steam’s wild west which is Early Access. The name and date of the title means want-to-be bush commanders will be fighting the South African Border War from the perspective of multiple factions such as SADF, SWATF and UNITA. The game is content completed.

Its Early Access phase will last for 3 to 6 months, mainly, with its focus being on getting “critical feedback on the UI/UX, balancing and iron out possible bugs”.

I won’t be purchasing this, however. Since the developing team never fixed the graphical glitches of Afghanistan ’11, I can’t play it on any of my systems without the game constantly flashing a black screen every time a menu is opened or closed. Just installed it and tried to make sure I was correct and still am. For Heaven’s sake, just fix this. There’s no way to play the damn game like this.

Company of Heroes 3 – Steel Sheperd Update

The most contentious choice in the best strategy games of 2023 listCompany of Heroes 3 keeps getting updates. The Italian dynamic campaign experience is getting revamped, with the main change being the disappearance of auto-resolve. Battle results will always cause some damage to both companies, meaning that, after nearly a year after the game’s release, things like defences and naval bombardments will have a real impact on the campaign map. There’s also a new mission to ease players into the fight.

Wartales, Pirates of Belerion

Excellent turn-based tactics and RPG Wartales is getting an expansion in a couple of weeks titled Wartales, Pirates of Belerion. The expansion will add the titular Belerion Archipelago, more than 25 hours of new adventures, enemies, and sea creatures.

Wartales, Pirates of Belerion is coming out on December 14th.

Darkest Dungeon 2: The Binding Blade

The classic workhorse of the original Darkest Dungeon is back in The Binding Blade DLC. That’s right, our boy, The Crusader has returned! Alongside him arrives The Duelist, a disciplined and deadly combatant that can attack and defend in equal measure. The DLC will go live December 11th.
