Strategy and Wargaming News – 21st October – Ultimate General: American Revolution, Silent Depth 2, Digital Combat Simulator

The end of the year is indeed a busy time for gaming enthusiasts as it brings about a flurry of “top bests,” “games to look forward to” lists, retrospectives, and the eagerly anticipated Steam Winter Sale recommendations. For strategy aficionados, there’s always something to look forward to, with new games being announced and released, ensuring that the genre continues to thrive.

Ultimate General: American Revolution Lives

After a less-than-stellar launch of Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts, I’m doing my best to keep expectations in check for this one. However, the gameplay footage available on the website is making that harder than it should be. The footage provides a glimpse into the game’s potential and that can be quite enticing indeed.

MicroProse Announces Two New Games

Silent Depth 2: Pacific and Rise of Piracy were announced by MicroProse Software last week. Silent Depth 2: Pacific puts players in command of a Gato class submarine, providing a “lite sub-sim” experience, while Rise of Piracy is described as a real-time strategy game with a focus on pirate adventures, drawing more comparisons to Sid Meier’s Pirates than it does Age of Empires.

Digital Combat Simulator Gets Bigger and Better

Digital Combat Simulator 2.9 update open-beta is now available, and one of the most comprehensible simulators available just keeps getting better and better. Among the numerous features and enhancements in this update, the implementation of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), new AI models, the introduction of CRAM Air Defense Systems, and various graphical enhancements stand out.

Industrial Annihilation Announced

This news came out of nowhere and so does this game’s idea of funding itself to fruition. Industrial Annihilation’s idea of funding its development through StartEngine is an interesting departure from traditional funding methods like crowdfunding. The game’s focus on the production aspect of things, rather than just combat, offers a fresh perspective in a genre that often leans heavily on warfare. I’m interested to see how this one pans out.

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint, developed by Trese Brothers, seems to be an intriguing addition to the world of squad-based, turn-based tactics games. Set in the cyberpunk future of 2231, the game appears to draw inspiration from the cult-hit Invisible Inc., which was released in 2015.

Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive Updated

One of the best World War II games ever made – Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive– is still getting updated almost two years after its initial release. Update 1.06 brings not only small fixes and quality-of-life improvements but also notable additions, including a new November 1944 Puffendor scenario and enhancements to the game’s AI.

I’ve been running Strategy and Wargaming at my own expense since 2017, with only the ad-revenue to cover for the hosting, with everything else being done by me. It’s thanks to the goodwill of videogame publishers like Slitherine, Hooded Horse, and others that I’m able to cover games prior to their releases.
