C’mon you apes, do you want to live forever?! Just a couple of hours ago Slitherine lift the veil a bit more on their up-and-coming real-time-strategy game, Starship Troopers- Terran Command. Marco A. Minoli is joined by Executive Producer on the game, David Sharrock to discuss the various missions shown. The “Canyon Ambush“ misadventures you can see down below but, if you wish to give a look at the other ones here’s the timeline for the second video.
“Capturing the Bridge” 24:31; “Night Clash at the Factory“– 35:06 ; “Battle in the Streets” 50:06
Each mission is then followed up by a brief run-down commentary by David, I advise you watch those if you want the full info.
Now, a small personal revelation to kickstart the week: Starship Troopers is my favourite movie of all time. Yes, really. And I truly believe that if you, my dearest reader, don’t enjoy the film there might be something wrong going on up there, so go get an MRI to see where it all went wrong.
In all honesty, tho: the small snippets don’t show much and the lack of an UI makes the whole process of watching it a tad confusing. Let’s start by taking a closer look at the visual aspect first. They’re serviceable, at best. Saved only by Starship Troopers visually striking ridiculousness and that unique sci-fi mix up of WWI-space-tactics with soldiers sporting Imperial Guards uniforms from Warhammer 40K, facing endless waves of gigantic otherworldly bugs and dying horrible deaths. Animations seem a bit stiff right now but hopefully that will be addressed as this is beta is still subject to change. Just for the record, if any developer reads this that is a shame dead bugs and the green sludge disappear after a while. In the sound department there’s really nothing much to say, unfortunately, as the trailer music was way too loud when compared to the gameplay but the movie guns always sounded great and impactful, with clear clanky, industrialized and metallic sounds that contrasted greatly with the organic and biotic shrieks from the bugs. Hopefully this will be replicated to great cinematic effect.
Units-wise the bugs encompass your usual suspects of limb-cleaving Warriors, flesh-melting Tankers and head-chopping Hoppers and Plasma-chuggers. It doesn’t seem to stray too far from the first Starship movie even tho the original trailer showed some scorpion-look-alike creature that I don’t remember seeing. Anyways I’m all for inclusion of new bugs as long as they don’t get too out of hand- The more bugs to squash the better. Human units appear to have your regular variety of rifle wielding grunts, flammenwerfer, rocket launchers, snipers, turrets and radio operators that call in for reinforcements. Units have unique abilities and skills but without any kind of UI it’s hard to understand the extent of these features.
The steam page for the game reads “As a campaign progresses, technological breakthroughs unlock the true potential of the Federation’s arsenal with E-Pulse rifles, TAC Fighter airstrikes, heavily armed Marauder mechs, and many more developments optimized for spraying Bug ichor across the battlefield.”. Hopefully these missions we’ve been seeing are only a smaller scraps of larger battles expecting us, fans. I expect nothing less than an Outpost Scene somewhere across the campaign with never-ending hordes of bugs. The story was revealed to be all new, with nothing relating directly to the movies.
My hopes are high but I won’t hold my breath for the time being until a set my eyes upon larger missions and the gameplay with a fully visible UI. Hopefully the devs won’t be afraid of challenging their players and trow the mobile infantry-wannabe into some crazy situations with overwhelming and challenging odds stacked on the bugs favour.
