The Most Anticipated Strategy and Wargames Releasing in 2022

Turn Based Tactics

Scramble: Battle of Britain

Remember Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol (and later, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies)? The colorful, turn-based aerial dogfight generator? Players took turns deciding their aircraft maneuvers and watching them unfold, hoping to get the upper hand on the enemy Sopwiths? Well, Scramble: Battle of Britain is going for the same concept but taking it to a whole another level by introducing dynamic flight physics, a 3D airspace, and a level of unit control Sid’s classic could never achieve. What’s quite underwhelming is the lack of any mention in the Steam page of the game of any dynamic campaign, mentioning instead “single-player and co-op missions as well as quick skirmishes and competitive scenarios”.

Marvel: Midnight Suns

Oh! What is this? A turn-based tactical RPG called Marvel: Midnight Suns? Oh boy! And from Firaxis and 2K? It’s basically a lesser version of XCOM! Not going to lie I love the idea of playing a team of Marvel Heroes in a turn-based tactical setting. That is something I would be totally down to but so I’m really hoping they manage to implement their card-based skill system correctly and that it doesn’t ruin the experience. The video above from Gamespot showcases the fighting system and it appears to be way more in-depth than what the original trailer led us to believe it might be, cards have side effects, conditions, combos, different utilities, and some most powerful ones have costs associated with them. Units are customizable with “hundreds of different” costumes, the main hero nicknamed “The Hunter” is the first unique superhero in the Marvel universe, created by the players. The story is your usual good guys trying to save humanity from being destroyed by an elder God and such, nothing too exciting there. Here’s hoping this is actually a good one and worthy of bearing the name of the XCOM reboot developers.

The game is set to come out sometime during 2022 according to its Steam page.

Jagged Alliance 3

There are a few settings I dislike as much as setting something in a banana republic. Of all the things one could choose, it baffles the mind why someone would decide to set a game in a tropical paradise destroyed by the dictatorial ambitions of disgruntled generals. It’s more overused than a Cuban taxi and an Argentinian submarine put together- Just CauseTropicoFar Cry 6. For some reason, Jagged Alliance 3 has decided it was time to revisit the setting instead of banking on something new. When are we going to get a tactical game set in Eastern Europe? Kosovo, anyone? What happened to nostalgic Russian bad guys of yesteryear? Anyway, Jagged Alliance 3 is coming to the nation of Grand Chien and is expected to be what one would expect of a Jagged Alliance game, turn-based tactical combat with party management RPG.

Expeditions: Rome

Expeditions: Rome seems such an obvious concept it’s painful how it wasn’t done before. A tactical turn-based RPG in ancient Rome. Players will live the adventures of a young Legatus in a quest to increase his military proficiency while enacting the will of Rome. Fortunately, we know the game to be in good hands if the pedigree of the other two games on the Expeditions series is anything to go by.

We won’t have much to wait until we find out, as it is releasing on January 20th, 2022.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

Let’s play a game and yell “I really want to play XCOM 3” every time you read the sentence “turn-based tactical RPG”. Oh, would you know? Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is – what one might call- a turn-based tactical RPG but instead of being set in Rome or in some isolated Banana Republic it’s set in the universe of 40,000, featuring a story-driving campaign with the player heading the Grey Knights in a galaxy-wide xenopurging fest. If the game is as good as Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector I’ll be more than happy with this one.

Chaos Gate is set to come out during the year 2022 even though no precise date has been announced as of yet.

Metal Slug: Tactics

Look, I’m not expecting Metal Slug: Tactics to be the pinnacle of isometric turn-based strategy games but it’s a classic franchise revitalized in a way I honestly wouldn’t expect- and they say the genre strategy is dead. Ah! If anything is more alive than ever!

Warhammer 40,000 Battlesector: Necron Faction

The immortal (but extremely petty) Necrons have awakened after their 60 million year slumber. The new faction brings to the table(top! ah!) 14 new units, new gameplay mechanics, weapons, and skills. This paid DLC will add an entirely new campaign type, built on a “conquest-style” kind of game where Necrons, Blood Angels, and Tyranids will fight to the death. The campaign will take place in procedurally generated maps were capturing territory, building armies, and fighting for the control of valuable resource nodes are the keys to victory.

There’s no release date announced as of yet but we can certainly expect to have our go at the Necrons soon-ish.

Panzers on the Steppe is not worth to be here.
And I say this with sorrow, as it has a Mac version.
