100 Amazing Steam Summer Sale Recommendations

Real-Time-Strategy

Stalingrad – 0,99 € – It’s the Blitzkrieg franchise but focusing on the battle of Stalingrad. Purchase if you have interest in this particular battle, otherwise skip and get the Blitzkrieg Anthology.

Men of War: Red Tide – 0,99 € – If you’re reading my words I’m sure you own AT LEAST one of the games in the second best RTS World War II series ever. When I get asked for recommendations on Men of War campaigns, definitely Red Tide is the one to go- very unusual set of missions but for the most part it avoids the usual shitty stealth missions that – for some indescribable reason- Men of War designers never realized how crappy their engine is for that.

Stronghold HD – 1,19 € – Become a Lord, build your own castle and wrestle your opponents for control of the British Isles. One of my most played games ever, just about perfect in every way possible.

Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology – 1,49 € – There’s just something fascinating about the honest brutality in which the Blitzkrieg franchise depicts warfare. Tanks and arty reign supreme, infantry is just meat for the grinder. 1 and 2 are still great throwback experiences. It might be old, but it’s still a nugget of nostalgia gold.

Stronghold Crusader HD – 1,59 € – Don’t buy Stronghold Crusader 2, just get this first one instead. A classic.

STAR WARS – Galactic Battlegrounds Saga – 1,74 € – Age of Empires II but it’s Star Wars. That’s all there is to it and it’s glorious.

Homeworld Remastered Collection – 3,19 € – Another cult classic, remastered. Watch the trailer in the case you haven’t heard of it. Oh, and set outside.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Game of the Year Edition – 3,24 € – The first endeavour of Relic Games into the Far Future is arguably it’s best. A classical real time strategy game with a fantastic mod community.

Supreme Commander 2 – 3,24 € – A cult classic that never saw widespread popularity in it’s heyday but remains as a testament on how crazy some games can get. Hundreds of futuristic robots fighting across wide maps lead to one of the first implementation of a zoomed-out tactical map in the original Supreme Commander. It’s a fun romp for it’s price.

Syrian Warfare – 3,24 € – Men of War goes to the middle east and has a good campaign.

Battle of Empires: 1914- 1918 – 3,69 € – Battle of Empires might not be love at first sight but it carries some endearing qualities that will keep you coming back to it after those temporary trench-hopping surges have passed. While I’ve focused on the french in this small article I can assure you that both the British and German campaign pack the same love and attention from the developers.

Door Kickers – 3,79 € – Not your typical street gangster simulator, no. Unlike what the game might suggest kicking doors is really not all that common. What is tho, is leading a team of SWAT officers through various scenarios from a top down perspective in what I can only describe as the planning phase for the original Rainbow Six games. Very similar to Frozen Synapse.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – 3,99 € – ” If there’s anything I learned from playing both Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3 is that Mimimi Games are masters at their craft and that they have perfected the Stealth-Strategy genre, reviving a bracket in gaming that had long perished”. For 3,99 it’s an absolute no brainer. It also has a new DLC coming up soon called Aiko’s Choice.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition – 4,99 € – It’s the first Age of Empires.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – 4,99 € – Launched when Relic was scoring hit after hit, Dawn of War II distanced itself from it’s predecessor by focusing on smaller scale tactics, with every unit having several skills and requiring a fair bit of micromanaging. It ditched the base building aspect and it focused a lot on the four F’s that made Company of Heroes so beloved: fire, fix, flank and finish.

Men of War: Assault Squad 2 – 4,99 € – It’s MoW without any campaign, focusing solely on multiplayer or skirmish against the AI.

Total War: MEDIEVAL II – 6,24 € – It’s Total War in medieval period but the best thing to do with it is to install the Third Age mod.

Total War: NAPOLEON – 6,24 € – It’s Total War in the musket era! And it’s also the base game for the best World War 1 mod.

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition – 6,99 € – Buy it only if you like Halo and RTS. It’s very simplistic but it’s not a bad game. It’s fun for the campaign.

Total War: SHOGUN 2 – 7,49 € – It’s Total War in Sengoku Jidai Japan and arguably the best Total War of all time.

Sudden Strike 4 – 7,99 € – “[…] I made a mistake and said that Sudden Strike 4 was not very good at being a decent videogame. I wish to correct that to: Sudden Strike is semi-decent as an RTS and I very much enjoy it despite the lack of depth”.

Dungeons III – 9,89 € – The most charming game of 2018. I wrote this about it: “Dungeons 3 stands out as being a colourful two layered game by mixing the underground facet of light-dungeon management and adding up a cover of typical RTS that has you controlling powerful evil minions to defeated the disgusting forces of evil. All this action is filled by the buttery voice of the game’s narrator that made Stanley’s Parable the gem that is today, Kevan Brighting”.

Total War: WARHAMMER II – 20,39 € – I’ve been avoiding the word “interesting” this whole article but some games just can’t escape it. Call it peculiar, unusual, captivating, engaging, compelling. But the battles of Warhammer II are so much more interesting then those boring and pesky humans poking holes on each other. Dragons, zombie pirates, ghosts, elves, giant trees, lizards, skaven and chaos thingies all face one another with the most absurd army combinations available. Centaurs getting peppered by warp fire? Check. Wrecked hull of a ship with two legs firing hand cannons at lines of high elves? Check. Feral manticores and witches tearing each other apart? Check.

Iron Harvest -12,49 € – Last year a wise man wrote that “It is not that I dislike Iron Harvest, it’s that some things just don’t end up well together. Nevertheless I will get around to buying Iron Harvest as the single player campaign got me interested enough for me to keep wanting to explore this alternate post WW1 setting”. Just bought it.
